Up or Down

Up or Down

When turning a bowl from a plainsawn plank, you have a choice, rings up or rings down. By that I mean, which face will be the rim and which face will be the foot. I am not an artist but I made a sketch below to illustrate.

In the last few days I’ve made two cherry bowls from the same plank. One is with rings up, the other is with rings down. The photo’s below show the end of the plank.

Remember when you look at the pics below that these two bowls were made from consecutive slices from the same plank. What a difference up or down makes!

The bowls look nothing alike. Both are nice but in this case I vote rings up!
