#2842 Ambrosia Maple Shallow Dish (9" x 1 1/8")

This ambrosia maple shallow dish or plate has unfilled ambrosia beetle holes.  The beetles attack the live tree and eat their way around leaving behind a fungus that feeds their larvae when they hatch.  The process is referred to as "fungus farming".  The fungus colors the wood.  This bowl was made from a plank that I bought at a sawmill in 1978.  The beetles and fungus moved out many years ago (when the tree was still growing.)  This plate has a very thin  drying crack in the bottom that has been repaired.  This dish has a rolled over, curved taper, undercut rim and a raised foot.  It has a food safe, natural, oil finish.
