A Man and his Dog

I get up every morning, seven days a week, and walk to my shop to work. My dog Oscar waits impatiently while I shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, make a second pot of coffee to take to the shop and brush my teeth. We get up really early, no alarm clock, usually before 5:00 AM.

On the walk to the shop, Oscar (he’s a Harlequin Great Dane) chases squirrels, every day. It reminds me of the movie “Up”. Squirrel. The squirrels climb the nearest tree, sit on a limb and cluck. He never catches one but he’s gotten very close a bunch of times. The patch of woods between the house and the shop is loaded with pretty big oak and hickory trees. There are always enough nuts and acorns to support a booming squirrel population.

I work until 5:00 PM in the shop most days. Oscar scratches on the door to go out and come back in periodically during the day , but mostly he lays on his bed. Some days I run the sawmill. Oscar has a bed out there too but sometimes he lays in the sawdust, it’s moist and cool.

In the evening I take pictures of the bowls I’ve made and put them up on the website. My inside work area is in the basement. Oscar has a bed beside my desk there but sometimes he lays down on the carpeted landing in the stairwell.

We go to bed fairly early, get up and do it again. He’s a good dog.
