Oscar the Cone Head
I took Oscar to the vet yesterday to be neutered. His vet had recommended that we wait until he was two years old to be neutered because he is a giant breed. He was two years old on Nov. 13th. He loves to ride in the truck. We put the back seat up and a dog bed on the floor. He has about a 4’ X 6’ area and 2 windows. No matter the weather, i put the drivers side passenger window down enough so he can stick his head out. He can be seen biting the air with his lips flapping when we drive down the road. I can watch him in the rear view mirror. We both do a lot of smiling while we’re driving down the road.
When I returned home after dropping Oscar off, my wife Pennie asked how my day would go without Oscar’s help in the shop. I hadn’t thought about it. Oscar comes with me everywhere, including to the shop every day. About 10 AM I had this strange feeling. I turned off the lathe and looked around the shop. It hit me, Oscar wasn’t there.
Oscar likes the vet. My daughter’s fiance Matt works there. Oscar gets special treatment at the vet. The surgery went well. When I picked him up, the receptionist said she had seen Matt on the floor beside Oscar’s kennel comforting him several times during the day. She said it with a warm, bright smile.
I picked up Oscar at 4 PM. Matt walked him to the car. Oscar was still pretty dopey from the anesthesia. He had been on an IV drip all day so he wobbled to a strip of grass and peed for what seemed like 10 minutes. He was wearing a cone to prevent him from contact with his incision.
He has got to be doped up for a few days to reduce his anxiety. He has to be on a leash when he goes out. Even though he’ll probably sleep all day, it will be nice to have him back in the shop.
