Scarface

This beautiful curly black walnut wooden bowl has a big drying crack that has been repaired. I go to great lengths to prevent my bowls from cracking when they dry. I coat them in Anchorseal (a wax emulsion) and wrap them in brown paper for 3 months. Green bowls (made from freshly cut trees) shrink when they dry. They actually become egg shaped. If the bowl isn’t an even thickness from rim to foot that increases the chances of a stress crack. If the rim isn’t rounded over that increases the likelihood of a crack.

Here is a poplar bowl that I unwrapped today. It has been drying in the brown paper since 11/23. Note that is is 1” larger in one dimension than it is in the other - egg shaped.

This image shows the same poplar bowl highlighting the rounded over rim.

We do live in an imperfect world. If you can live with a repaired crack in your fruit/salad bowl, you can save a bundle on the curly wild black walnut bowl (scarface) at the top of the page. It’s reduced $100.
