Small Bowls and Jewelry Dishes - Why?
One reason is that not everybody can afford to buy a $200 or $300 bowl right now. Inflation is eating up a whopping percentage of our paychecks. This Christmas, the gifts just need to be a little less expensive. Small bowls and jewelry/ring dishes showcase my art but don’t break the bank of my customers. Their price fits into a squeezed budget.
Another reason is some very stunning but smaller pieces of wood can be used to make jewelry or ring dishes and small bowls. I started collecting wood over 50 years ago and have hundreds of boards with interesting color and figure just the right size to make these bowls and dishes. I just made a bowl from a piece of wood I bought at Constantines in the Bronx, NY in the 1970’s.
The last good reason is that they are fun to make. They are pretty easy to turn and don’t take an inordinate amount of time to complete (though I can’t charge my normal labor rate or I’d never sell one.)
In short, it’s a win-win-win!
