They Are Not All Spectacular (But They Are All Beautiful)!
The bowls I’ve made the past couple of weeks have a high wow factor. They have showy grain and or stunning color. They came from planks that I’ve saved for years. The bowl I’m putting up today is the opposite, it’s subtle, understated. It’s an attractive bridesmaid. It’s copper pink with burgundy transition lines on the growth rings. The bowl is almost perfectly centered on the growth rings. I’ve pushed it back in line several times and put other bowls up first. I’ve made it wait because it’s not as showy. It’s a lovely bowl. It’s functional. It can be used for nuts, wrapped candies, grated parmesan cheese and fresh spices.
I can often tell if a bowl is going to sell right away. Natural edge bowls sell pretty quickly. I don’t make nearly enough of them. They are a little harder to turn. You have to be very careful turning the rim. If a piece of bark breaks off the bowl is worth considerably less. I’m pretty good at going slowly and taking little bites so that doesn’t happen. Below is a natural edge black walnut bowl. I love the contrast of the white sapwood against the chocolate brown heartwood.

Burl bowls, especially those with natural edges sell the fastest. Below is a natural edge wild cherry burl bowl. It sold in two days.
