This very shiny thermally modified tiger maple bowl is made from overcooked maple. The lumber is actually heated in an oven. "Thermally modified lumber is real wood super-heated in oxygen-deprived kilns (400°F to 450°F) using only heat and steam. This chemical-free process alters the cellular structure, making the wood highly resistant to rot, pests, and moisture while granting it superior dimensional stability and a rich, dark color." I think this particular piece got overcooked but it really is pretty. In natural light, this piece is stunning. It had a food safe, natural, oil finish.
