Making Bowl Blanks on the Sawmill

I used a different method to make bowl blanks out of the beech logs today. I used the sawmill. I cut a flat on the top of the log then cut just above the pith. I flipped the log. Here it is flipped.

Next I cut the flat. The flat gives me a flat surface when I cut the blank round on the band saw.

Next I cut the slab that the blanks will be cut from.

The top piece is the slab for salad bowls. The bottom piece I will use to make smaller bowls.

The log checked/split badly so i was only able to get 3 blanks instead of 4.

So here are the three slab sections ready to be cut round on the band saw. More on the process tomorrow.
