Oscar and I Went To Hickory Today For Some Mustard

Oscar and I took a trip to Hickory to the Klingspor Woodworking Shop. We did not browse, we did not lollygag, we got right down to business. Coleman, on my instruction, had ordered in a very special, very big new mustard colored addition to my shop. We paid and had it loaded in no time. Coleman helped me strap it down and we headed back to Mount Ulla.

My son Stephen, who can do anything, was waiting with the backhoe, forks on, to unload it. It weighs 1400 lbs. My shop doors are 8’ wide. The pallet is 9’ long. We managed to get it off-loaded onto some 4X4’s with the nose almost on the shop floor. My little Kubota huffed and puffed and pushed it in the door twisting it straight. We got it in just far enough to close the doors. We used my pallet jack to lift it high enough to put the 4X4’s in place.

Here it is on the trailer:

In the coming days I will dismantle the crating, move it into it’s final position in the shop and check to make sure all is like it should be. It has a 6” dust port and requires 800 cfm of air. Fortunately I already have that. It takes a 30 amp three phase dedicated circuit for the 7.5 HP motor. Fortunately I have that too!

I can now finally (after 43 years in my woodshop) joint a wide plank because this is a Powermatic PJ1696 JOINTER, 7.5HP 3PH 230/460V 16” jointer. When I get it out of the crate it’s going to look like this:

Oscar and I don’t always bring home monsters, but it’s fun when we do. Especially a mustard colored one. I can’t wait to tear into a stack of planks and see what this puppy will do!
