The Logs, The Logs

Although It was an extremely hot and humid day to do it, Travis and I cut the log into 4 sections 5 feet long. He had the use of a tractor with a front end loader this week. We scooped them up, loaded them on the trailer and Oscar and I drove them home. Tomorrow I’ll cut them into 18-20” sections, cut the sections in half length-wise then cut them round.

I will have to coat them with wax so they don’t split and begin turning the “green” bowls. Each half section will get cored into 3 bowls; small, medium and large. That is 18 bowls per five foot log times 4 logs, around 72 bowls from this load.It will probably take a week or more to turn the green bowls. I have to turn a finished bowl every day too!

The bowls will not have too much color or figure. They are American Beech. The wood is very close grained so it will make wonderful salad bowls.
