A Little Remodel

I rotated my 3520c lathe 90 degrees and built a temporary enclosure around it with 4x8x2 foam board. My huge air cleaner draws air through the door opening in the enclosure. Mounted above the spindle is a 8” duct that will have a hood. Behind the spindle is another hood attached to a 4” wye. The other connection on the 4” wye is a 4” vacuum hose to “sweep” the floor.. They are all fitted with blast gates.

The rear hood is on a sliding arm attachment that allows it to be moved back and forth according to the size of the bowl. All of this is designed to eliminate air born dust, particularly when I’m sanding. I still wear a dust mask but there is almost no dust.

All of the ducting goes to a 2000 cfm Grizzly cyclone dust collector with cartridge filters.

This summer my son Stephen installed a 2400 cfm mini split in the big shop. I leave the 8’ doors between the 2 shops open and so far both shops stay at 70 degrees. I have a wood stove in the bowl shop for the brutal winter days.

I was amazed that the floor sweep works so well. I think it could suck the chrome off of a trailer hitch. More pictures in a later post.
